Nov. 6th 2007:  A Good Day for Democrats at the Municipal Level

A Message from County Chairman Cliff Wilson

Although we did not make the gains we had hoped for at the county level, we clearly scored significant victories among the municipal contests. Statewide, Democrats won both Supreme Court seats, with Seamus McCaffery and Debra Todd. McCaffery carried Delaware County, the first Democratic state judicial candidate to do so. And, Democrat Christine Donohue was elected to the state Superior Court.

In county wide races, our candidates averaged a bit better than 41% - the same as 2005 County Council candidates and a point lower than the row office candidates for that year. While we improved our vote by 6,000 over the 2005 election, the Republicans did likewise, thus increasing their low-high margin to 14,300 from 12,200 votes.

At the municipal level, Democrats made major inroads and scored significant victories. Democrats will now be a majority on the Councils of the Boroughs of Colwyn, Norwood and Ridley Park. We elected Democratic councilmembers for the first time in Millbourne, Sharon Hill, Folcroft and Morton. And Marple Township, with the election of two new Democratic commissioners, becomes the largest township in the county that is Democratic controlled.

Lansdowne, Darby Boro, Yeadon, East Lansdowne, Brookhaven, Media, Swarthmore and Nether Providence retained Democrat majorities. Sharon Hill elected a Democrat to the Tax collector position, the first Afircan American elected to office in that borough; and Rose Valley chose a Democrat for Tax Collector. In Upper Darby, Pam Maven became the first Democrat elected to the School Board. We gained school directors in Interboro and William Penn School Districts. And, Democrats elected Len Tenaglia as District Judge in Darby Borough. In total, Democrats took 25 positions that had been held by Republicans while giving up only 4 to them.

ON TO 2008. Petitions for 2008 races begin on January 22, 2008. We will elect a President to get our country back on the right track! We will elect state Auditor and Attorney Generals and a State Treasurer. We will re-elect Congressmen Joe Sestak and Bob Brady. And there will be State Senate and State House races (more on those in the future). We are planning for the future with our new party headquarters at 104 Gayley Ave in Media; a new regional coordination plan that will tie the 2008 elections to projected victories in 2009; and participation in the Democratic National Committee 2008 Victory Precinct Captain Project.

Asian American Association of Delaware County Raising Aid for Cyclone Victims

In the wake of the recent devastating floods in August/September, another powerful Cyclone SIDR, struck Bangladesh again on November 15 with more destructive power than Hurricane Katrina. According to the latest information, more than 4000 people are confirmed dead after the powerful storm ripped through southern and central districts. Thousands more are missing and feared dead and an estimated 280,000 are without shelter. Countless animals have perished.  Innumerable homesteads, stores, and schools have been obliterated and thousands of acres of crop have been flattened.

The Asian American Democratic Association of Delaware County is helping to raise financial aid for the victims of this natural disaster. Please do your best and donate generously. To contribute, contact Abu Amin Rahman, President, Asian American Democratic Association of Delaware County at aburahman@comcast.net or 610-299-6242.
