Report from the Democratic Convention Rep. Lentz Office Opening
____________________________________________________
Over 350 Democrats, including nearly two hundred and fifty voting members of
the Delaware County Democratic Committee, gathered at Paxon Hollow Country
Club on Tuesday night and, in a show of party strength and unity, voted in
favor of an open primary for the office of county council. The committee
members also unanimously endorsed two candidates for the Court of Common
Pleas.
Seven Democrats have filed nominating papers to run for the office of County Council, including: * Bob Dimond - former Mayor of East Lansdowne who currently serves as Media's Tax Collector * John Innelli - member of the PA Democratic State Committee who was endorsed by the Philadelphia Inquirer for County Council in 2005 * David Landau - chair of the Nether Providence Democratic Committee who ran for Congress in 1988 * Patricia Lewis West - an educator and former member of the Chester City Council * Ann O'keefe - an attorney from Haverford and the Democratic candidate for Register of Wills in 2005 * Rocco Polidoro - insurance agent from Springfield who co-chaired Veterans for Sestak * Jayne Young - the Mayor of Lansdowne Borough and member of PA Democratic State Committee In his remarks on the State of the Party, County Party Chairman Cliff Wilson urged the committee people to make no endorsement and to show that the Democratic Party is open to the people, in contrast to the GOP: "Four weeks ago the Delaware County Republican leaders met in this very room. They closed those doors and said NO to four candidates for County Council and three for Common Pleas Court and accepted those that were the chosen. We are better than that. We have the opportunity tonight if you will take it to open those doors and say yes to seven candidates who seek the County Council and pledge to support the three who emerge victorious from an open Primary. Lets trust the people this is their party and we should do everything we can to let them know that and believe that." A motion for an open primary was made by Bill Thomas, Vice Chair of the Mid-County Democratic Committee, and seconded by County Party Vice Chair Tony Campisi. The motion passed unanimously. The committee also unanimously endorsed the following candidates for Delaware County Court of Common Pleas: * Frank Daly - former Mayor of Media and candidate for Congress in 1992; currently the President of Media Borough Council * Mike Farrell - attorney and candidate in 2006 for State Senator, who came within four points of beating the incumbent Republican In addition to the above actions, the convention delegates also unanimously adopted a party platform and three resolutions. The first resolution declared the party's support for legislation introduced in the House of Representatives by Congressman Joe Sestak and co-sponsored by Congressman Bob Brady that by limiting America's involvement to only a handful of military operations in 2008 would effectively require the withdrawal of almost all American troops from Iraq by Dec. 31, 2007. The second resolution declared support for efforts to combat the rate of illegal gun trafficking and the ensuing rates of gun violence, injury and death in the county and the Commonwealth. The final resolution stated the committee's demand for a state or Federal universal health care plan The convention also heard from many candidates running for State Supreme and Superior Court. The number of people attending the convention and pre-event cocktail party was the highest ever.
