Report from the Democratic County Nominating Convention

Over two hundred Democrats attended the annual nominating convention on Tuesday February 15.These conventions which we began calling in 1996 allow the county committee members, including additional and ex-officio, to vote on endorsements. Before that these endorsements were made by the party leaders.

Democratic County Chairman Cliff Wilson delivered his State of the Party Report which highlighted the gains Democrats are making in Delaware County and our early support of Howard Dean's election as National Chairman. To read the chairman's State of the Party Report in its entirety, click here.

Convention attendees also heard from Paul Scoles, who announced his candidacy for Congress next year. Dr. Scoles was greeted with a standing ovation. Click here for Paul's speech.

The convention also endorsed candidates for county wide offices that are up for election in 2005.

Party Vice Chair Tony Campisi nominated, on behalf of the Executive Committee and the Leaders Council, John Innelli and Nancy Baulis for County Council. Click here to read the nominating speech.

Other candidates for county council were discussed and presented -- and John and Nancy's endorsement met with the support of nearly 83% of the county committee members present and voting.

The convention unanimously endorsed for Ann O'Keef for Register of Wills, Michael Shaw for Sheriff and Lawrence Healy for County Controller. O'Keefe is an estate attorney uniquely qualified for Register of Wills. Shaw holds a degree in Criminal Justice and is Director of Security for a large shopping mall in the county. Healy is a Benefits Representative with the United Food and Commercial Workers and represents a strong link to the labor community.

In addition, the convention overwhelming passed a resolution concerning the war in Iraq. Click here to read the resolution.

Worth Repeating

Republicans wandered around in the political wilderness for 40 years before they took back Congress. But the reason we lost control is that we forgot why we were entrusted with control to begin with.

The American people can't afford to wait for 40 years for us to put Washington back to work for them.

It can't take us that long.

And it won't take us that long, not if we stand up for what we believe in, organize at the local level, and recognize that this Party's strength doesn't come from the consultants down, it comes from grassroots up.
