Republicans Proposing the Largest Tax Increase in Pennsylvania History

You Can Take Action Now to Help the House Democrats Stop it!

Legislators representing the Pa. House right-wing Commonwealth Caucus will soon introduce legislation to lower the state sales tax rate – from 6 percent to either 4 percent or 4.5 percent – but to greatly expand the list of items subject to taxation. This scheme would provide money to eliminate roughly $5 billion in school property taxes, but it would expand the state sales tax to collect $12.4 billion more than is collected now. That sounds like a formula for the largest tax increase in Pa. history on average working people and senior citizens.

According to a study prepared by the nonpartisan, nonprofit research organization Citizens for Tax Justice, low-income households pay more than six times as great a percentage of their incomes in sales taxes as do wealthier families while middle-income households pay four times as great a share.

What would this mean for the average Pennsylvanian? The shorthand explanation that food and clothing purchases would now be taxed only scratches the surface of how this ill-advised proposal would hurt families and senior citizens.

You can help stop this tax increase by logging on to www.pahouse.com and clicking on our Action Alert to ask Republican lawmakers NOT to raise the regressive sales tax.

Worth Repeating

Let's face the reality: If ripping off the public trust; if distributing tax breaks to the wealthy at the expense of the poor; if driving the country into deficits deliberately to starve social benefits; if requiring states to balance their budgets on the backs of the poor; if squeezing the wages of workers until the labor force resembles a nation of serfs -- if this isn't class war, what is?

It's un-American. It's unpatriotic. And it's wrong
